Church of Expectation

At the start of Elden Ring, you will make your character before entering the world. This allows you to choose a souvenir with a starter class and a special starter item, which determines your attributes and starting gear. You can also customize your character's appearance.

After creating your character, you will spawn in the Church of Prospect. Go outside and follow the steps below until you come to a boss arena where the Grafted Scion appears. While it is possible to defeat this Grafted Sprout and gain additional loot, you must die in this fight. When you respawn you will find yourself in the Stranded Graveyard in Limgrave.

Elden Ring guide: Everything you need to do to complete Elden Ring

When you are born in Limgrave, you will find yourself in a cave. Nearby, you can descend into a lower cave known as the Cave of Knowledge. This is a short optional tutorial that goes back to this main area, so newbies to the formula/mechanics of FromSoftware games should dig down and learn the basics. You'll learn about warfare, stealth, and other important aspects that you'll want to understand before heading to the Lands In Between. If you want to learn more, check out our guides on how to use two-handed weapons and what the gear load is. When you're ready, take the elevator that passes by the Stranded Graveyard Site of Grace to make your way to the exit. You can return here at a higher level to enter the Fringefolk Hero's Grave and fight the Ulcerated Tree Spirit optional boss., but this is very difficult for now.

After exiting Stranded Graveyard you will find yourself in Limgrave. This is one of the many open world areas in the Elden Ring filled with secrets and optional areas for you to explore. There are many optional bosses to uncover, such as the Stonedigger Troll, Bloody Finger Nerijus, and Leonine Misbegotten. You can also head to the Coastal Cave to reach the Dragon Communion Church, where you can learn new Spells. But your main task is to reach the Great Erdtree and become the Lord of Elden. To do this, you need to find a Maiden. Talk to Varré at Grace's First Steps Site and he will let you know you are not a virgin and explain Grace. Then follow Grace Guidance, the gold line on your map, towards Elleh Church, where you will meet Merchant Kale. From there, Stormgate'

Once you arrive in Stormgate and use the nearby Grace Site or, if you choose to explore, after activating several Grace Sites around Limgrave, you will enter a cutscene where Melina approaches you. This will give your horse access to Torrent, allowing you to level up and start the main quest. With the support of your maiden, Melina, travel to Stormhill to battle Fell Omen Margit. After trying this battle or defeating Margit if you win on your first try, use a Place of Favor to talk to Melina again and travel to the Round Table Castle. Roundtable Hold is a hub area where you'll meet many NPCs on your journey, so be sure to come back often to see what's changed.

After defeating Margit, continue to Castle Stormveil. When you arrive, you will see that the main door is closed. Go to the left side passage where a man will summon you. Talk to the man and then choose to continue down this side path or wait by the door until it opens. Either way it will take you to Stormveil Castle and eventually fight the Inoculated Godrick. Godrick will drop Godrick's Great Rune, which you must activate in the Divine Tower of Limgrave. After defeating Godrick and activating the Great Rune, continue past the boss arena and continue to Liurnia of the Lakes.

Elden Ring guide: Everything you need to do to complete Elden Ring

Liurnia of the Lakes

Liurnia of the Lakes contains the Raya Lucaria Academy, your next destination. When you arrive in Liurnia after defeating Godrick, head left and down the path until you reach the Liurnia Lake Shore. Proceed through the lake in the northwest to Laskyar Ruins and use the teleporter to crash into the Southern Raya Lucaria Gate Grace Zone. This door is locked, but you can get a map from a nearby corpse leading to a Glintstone Key. Once you find the Glintstone Key, you can head to the Academy and follow the path through the Cuckoo Church and cemetery. At the end of the cemetery, you'll find a spinning waterwheel that you can use as an elevator to reach the Schoolhouse Classroom Site of Grace. Continue through the academy and climb the stairs to reach the debating hall.Radagon'

After fighting the Radagon's Red Wolf, go to the outside courtyard and run to the right. Use the rafters to get to the wide set of stairs and climb up the hill where you'll find the Karian Knight Moongrum. Defeat Moongrum and then use the elevator to go upstairs and fight Rennala, the Queen of the Full Moon. Rennala will drop another Great Rune, but this is already activated and allows you to respect your stats. This is especially useful if you want to make one of our best builds on Elden Ring. However, you can still go to the Divine Tower of Liurnia as part of Ranni's route.

After defeating Rennala, you can proceed to the Altus Plateau north of Liurnia using Dectus's Grand Lift or passing through the nearby Ravine. However, you can also travel to Caelid, the rotten lands east of Limgrave, to gain another Great Rune.

Elden Ring guide: Everything you need to do to complete Elden Ring

Caelid is a land of rot and disease east of Limgrave. Fortunately, you can cross it relatively quickly by following the main road from the South edge to Redmane Castle. In the castle, you will discover that the guards hold a festival here. If you choose to participate in the festival by talking to the castle by talking to the guard, you can go to the Caelid savages and fight the Starscourge Radahn. This will grant you another Great Rune that you can activate in the Divine Caelid Tower.

Of course, there are many more activities to do in Caelid. Here you can find a number of optional dungeons and bosses, as well as a powerful staff. When you're ready, use the aforementioned roads to reach Altus Plateau.

Altus Plateau

Altus Plateau is a much more beautiful region with many places to explore. However, those wishing to advance to the end of the game should use the Altus Plateau as a route to other key areas. Mount Gelmir is located in the northwest corner of the Altus Plateau, while the Royal Capital, Leyndell, is located in the East.

Other areas of note to explore if you're looking for optional content are Little Erdtree in the center of the Altus Plateau, the windmill village to the northeast, and the Shady Castle to the north.

Gelmir Mountain

Mount Gelmir is significantly smaller than the other regions mentioned so far, but contains Blasphemy Lord Rykard. Rykard is another Shardbearer with a Great Rune, so if you want to collect them all, you should go here.

Follow the road northwest from Altus Plateau to reach Gelmir Mountain. This will take you to the first Gelmir Mt campsite where you will find a message about rainbow stones. If you follow the stones it will trigger a cutscene where an NPC pushes you into the river below, so we recommend continuing along the bridge to the Ninth Mt Gelmir Campground Grace Zone. From here, use the spirit bow to leap up and battle the Full Adult Falling Star Beast on the cliff above. Defeat this boss and then use the nearby stones protruding from the cliff as a makeshift bridge to approach Volcano Manor.

Upon arrival at the mansion, go to Tanith and accept her invitation to join her group. Then go to the nearby corridor and use Tanith's key to enter the first room on the right. In the far right corner of this room, run to the wall to open a secret passage and enter a new area of the mansion. This is much larger, similar to Castle Stormveil or the Academy of Raya Lucaria, with many places to explore and explore. Go through the mansion until you find Lord of Blasphemy Rykard. Defeat Rykard to gain another Great Rune that you can activate in the Divine Tower of Western Altus. You can reach this tower from the Sealed Tunnel in Altus Plateau.

If you want a faster, but more deadly route to Rykard, you can also choose to complete Tanith's contracts instead of traversing Volcano Manor's inner sanctuaries. Tanith will ask you to complete 3 contract kills throughout the Lands Between and will pit you against a variety of challenging NPCs. These are easy to find because it will mark them on your map - just make sure you get the letters from the meeting room. Kill all three and then talk to Tanith to instantly teleport to Rykard's boss room.

Lendell, the Royal Capital

Leyndell is the capital at the foot of the Great Erdtree. To enter, you must go to the northeast side of the outer wall and fight a Dragon Tree Sentry. After winning, you can go to the capital if you already have two restored Great Runes. This means you must have defeated at least two of the following bosses:
  • Godrick (Limgrave)
  • Rennala (Liurnia)
  • Radahn (Caelid)
  • Rykard (Mount Gelmir)
Inside Leyndell, you must travel the streets and make your way to Erdtree, where you will fight the Omen King Morgott. Melina will leave you shortly before this fight, but chat with her again after you defeat Morgott and claim the Great Rune to earn a new quest. The entrance to the Great Erdtree has been blocked by thorns, so Melina asks you to go to the Mountain Tops of the Giants to get a special kind of kindling that you can use to burn the Giant Erdtree. It gives you the Rold Locket, which you can use to reach this area.

Follow the main road east from Leyndell to find a new area, the Forbidden Lands. While it is not necessary to complete the Elden Ring, you can deviate from here and use the path southeast through the Forbidden Lands to reach East Altus' Divine Tower and activate Morgott's Great Rune.

Otherwise, follow the East road to the Grand Lift of Rold. Use the elevator and go up to Mountaintops, where you need to find the Forge of Giants for Melina. Upon arrival, however, you will see the Bloody Finger Hunter Yura, which you may have encountered while fighting Bloody Finger Nerijus or other NPC invaders. This Yura, however, is a little different and warns you of the dangers of helping Melina. He says that Melina will burn herself as a kindling in a sacrifice to make you Lord of the Hand, which is not true. He tells you to go to the sewer below Leyndell to find the Flame of Frenzy to help set you on the right track.

This is where we enter the end zone and the road diverges. To continue with the main ending and serve two fingers, you must now go through the Mountain Peaks of the Giants until you reach the Fire Giant boss fight. Those who hope for another end must complete one of the following tasks:

Underground Passages

You can access the underground Shunning-Grounds from a well in the Royal Capital Leyndell. To find it, quickly head to the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace and go down the stairs. At the bottom, go through the door and turn left, then you need to jump over the ledge onto the roofs below. Then, head north over these rooftops and go down to find the well. Head down the well to enter the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds.

If you can reach the bottom of the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds, you will meet Three Fingers and discover a path to an alternate ending that allows you to become the Lord of Frenzied Flame. To reach the bottom, you have to pass pipes and tunnels until you reach an elevator descending from the great pit. There you'll find the Forsaken Depths of Grace Site and a passage that leads to a boss fight against Mohg, Omen. Defeat Mohg and then open the nearby chest to get an extremely good Talisman.

Hit the wall behind the chest to open a secret passage, and then go down the steps. This leads to another pit where you have to jump down between various ledges and coffins protruding from the sides. At the bottom, remove all your armor and weapons and then open the big door. Here you will enter a cutscene where you will meet Three Fingers and sing. After that, proceed to the Mountain Peaks of the Giants and reach the Forge of the Giants. Keep following this path until you reach the Broken Marika statue inside Erdtree, where you can choose to become the Master of the Mad Flame, achieving a different ending.

Ranni's Route

At the Elleh Church near the beginning of the game, you will first encounter Ranni as the witch Renna. After arriving in Liurnia, however, you can proceed to the Caria Estate in the northwest of the region and explore Ranni's tower. Here you will meet Ranni and begin his story who sends you to Nokron, the Eternal City and some other important regions around the Lands In Between. You have to find Fingerslayer Blade for Ranni in Nokron.

This step is required for both Ranni and Fia ending so make sure you complete this step for one of them. When you find this knife, return to Ranni's Rise and hand it over to him. It rewards you with the Inverted Karia Statue that allows you to reach the Liurnia Divine Tower and receive the Death Curse for Fia. If you want to complete the end of the fia, go to the Deep Roots Depths section of this guide. Otherwise, keep following the questline until you give Ranni the Dark Moon Ring in the Moonlight Altar.

After giving Ranni the Dark Moon Ring, continue through the Mountain Tops of the Giants until you reach the last area at the foot of Erdtree. Here, you can choose to ignore the Broken Marika statue and trigger a different ending by summoning Ranni instead.

Elden Ring guide: Everything you need to do to complete Elden Ring

Deep Root Depths

After entering the Carian Study Hall and the Liurnia Divine Tower, you will find the Death Curse. From here you can continue Ranni's route, while this also allows you to make another ending with Fia, the Deathbed Companion. Fia is usually in the Roundtable Containment, but will leave the Roundtable and wait in the Deep Root Depths after completing a short questline where she gives you a Weathered Dagger (deliver it to D, also in the Roundtable Conservation).

To access the Deeproot Depths, you must fight the Gargoyle bosses in the Eternal City of Nokron and use the coffin found in the boss arena to drive the waterfall to this new area. Then, proceed through the Deep Root Depths and climb the roots to find the Death Prince Throne that Fia has been waiting for. Give the Cursed Mark to Fia and then quickly return here to find her asleep. Interact with Fia to enter her dream and battle the Lichdragon Fortissax. After this fight, you can interact with Fia again to claim the Prince of Death's Restorative Rune. Now, go through Giants' Heights and select 'Use Death's Restorative Rune' on the Broken Marika statue below Erdtree to complete the ending of Fia.

Giants' Heights

Although the Mountain Hills may seem like a large area, you can use the long bridge over the cave to follow a very linear path to Donan Lake, past the giants. As you pass over the lake in the southeast, you will notice a considerable mist rising around you. Here you can choose to fight a dragon named Borealis, the Frozen Mist, but if you try to maintain your sense of direction (your compass is lost in the fog) and head southeast, you will eventually escape and find the First Church of Marika. Continue weaving through the mountains towards the Forge of Giants, where you will fight the Fire Giant boss.

After defeating the Fire Giant, you can go to the Forge of Giants, where you will find a point of no return. Here, your character will collapse as Melina sacrifices herself to burn the Great Erdag, turning Leyndell into the City of Ash and paving the way to the finale. When you wake up, you'll find yourself on Crumbling Farum Azula, an island southeast of the Giants Mountains.

From this area, head to the Dragon Temple on the north side, where you will fight the Godskin Duo boss. Then, take the path to the large colosseum building that curves southeast to battle the Beast Clergyman boss. Halfway through the fight, the boss will transform into Black Blade Maliketh. This second half is much harder, so prepare for a tough challenge. We recommend that you upgrade your farming runes a lot before trying to defeat Maliketh.

Elden Ring guide: Everything you need to do to complete Elden Ring

Elden Throne and Erdtree

Defeating Maliketh will respawn in the Ashen Capital, Leyndell, allowing you to advance to the foot of the now burning Erdtree. On the way you will meet Sir Gideon Ofnir, whom you met earlier in Roundtable Hold. Now you must fight the All-Knowing Gideon Ofnir in another brutal boss battle, after which you can move on to the Elden Throne. Here, where you fought Morgott before, you must now fight Lord Godfrey First Hand, who has regained his physical form. During the fight, Godfrey will transform into Warrior Hoarah Loux, so keep fighting until you complete this battle.

After defeating the warrior Hoarah Loux, you can advance to Erdtree and encounter the Radagon of the Golden Order. Defeat Radagon to enter the Elden Beast fight, the final Elden Ring boss battle. Defeat the Elden Beast and then rest at the nearby Grace Estate. Finally, you can interact with the Broken Marika statue and choose your ending. Here are the options you can choose from:
  • Fix Elden Ring (standard finish)
  • Use the Prince of Death's Restorative Rune
  • Become the Master of Madness (bad ending)
Alternatively, those who follow Ranni's path may choose to use Ranni's callsign instead, which will lead to a good ending.

Whichever you choose, this marks the end of Elden Ring so you can watch the final cutscene and take a deep breath. Finished. Now, it's time to start over and pick up the other endings.
